Session Title : Mentoring: An Essential Benefit for IEEE Members
Session Type : Breakout Session
Session Description : Mentoring is a valuable IEEE membership benefit, but creating, executing, and maintaining a mentoring program requires significant volunteer time and resources. Therefore, only a few IEEE OUs have been able to provide a high-quality mentoring program. The IEEE YP team piloted a new initiative where the YP Mentoring Program provided structured support (https://cmte.ieee.org/micromentoring) to address this gap. The YP Mentoring Program serves any IEEE OU of interest, provides tailored program design, consultancy, and volunteer support, and serves as a central hub for mentoring. Having the largest technical community is a “strength” to have an excellent mentoring program, but having a globally scattered community with different perceptions towards mentoring is a “challenge.” IEEE Young Professionals have set their targets on overcoming this challenge through the YP Mentoring Program and establishing a solid framework through which Mentoring can become a regularly available global member benefit.

MOVE is staffed by a network of hundreds of volunteers who cross-train with the Red Cross and other first responder teams to provide technology services at disasters. MOVE volunteers operate, maintain, and enhance the technology and trucks of the program. For additional information, visit move.ieeeusa.org.
